The musician today is: Café Olé

Inspired by the beautiful musical traditions from Spain and Latin-America, Café Olé is a captivating and versatile West-coast-based duo that wields a power to transport audiences through time and place. Vocalist Brittany Christina Bowman from Vancouver Island, and guitarist Oscar Robles Diaz from Mexico met well over a decade ago in Mexico City and have been collaborating in music and in life ever since. Singing in Spanish, they accompany their voices with nylon-string guitar and rhythmic handclaps. The sound they create is heartfelt. It is the outcome of the pair’s respective and shared experiences and demonstrative of their profound respect and appreciation for a variety of Spanish and Latin music styles, each with strong regional ties yet the simultaneous capacity to transcend language and political borders. Café Olé’s single – La Tierra (The Earth) – draws rhythmically from the flamenco palo known as ‘Soleá por Bulerias’ – and lyrically is as much a call for the protection of the natural world as it is a loving and meditative reflection on interconnection.
