Cumberland Village Square-Sunday Market
The Musician today is: Last Band Awake
“Last Band Awake” is a collaboration between two friends who love to play music together. The project was inspired by one night at a music camp where Luke English (singer/songwriter/guitar) declared he was pulling a rare all-nighter. Tereza Tomek (singer/songwriter/upright bass), the band member more prone to replacing sleep with fun, didn’t believe him and decided to also stay awake to bear witness. This duo consists of two prolific writers based in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island who mould words and themes into unique capsules of song. Whether covering rare meteorological events (Heat Dome), human stubbornness (Don’t Tell Me What To Do), self-esteem (Things Will Brighten Up For You), or non-conformity (Shaking at the Soul) they bring eccentric and entertaining stories to the stage. Their playful and energetic on-stage personas are partly inspired by their work with both youth and those young-at-heart teaching workshops and camps on music and nature appreciation. In addition to originals, the duo perform vintage swing and folk music, and songs by other Canadian songwriters they know and love. These artists respectfully acknowledge that they work, play and create on the Unceded traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land.
