We are super excited that this year Lunar New Year falls on Saturday (February 10, 2024). 2024 is the Year of the Dragon. Those born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to be ambitious, energetic, and charismatic, often inspiring others with their passion and enthusiasm. They are considered to be natural leaders, confident and unafraid to take risks, making them magnetic personalities in social and professional circles.
Food is a significant part of the New Year celebrations and in Chinese culture. It is tradition to celebrate with a large family reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve. ‘Lucky’ dishes that are usually served include steamed whole fish, dumplings and longevity noodles.
At the market in addition to our usual line up of vendors, we will also have some Lunar New Year inspired colouring pages and word searches for the kids (big and small), Lai See (red envelopes with chocolate coins), an informational display about Lunar New Year, a mini dragon scavenger hunt, and more.
To get the celebrations started Lok Yee Bakery has created a Seasonal Fried Rice Recipe (Recipe here). You can find most of the ingredients with the exception of the rice at the market.
Gung Hay Fat Choy!
Come for the freshness and stay for the fun!
