Comox Valley Farmers Markets is about people who love fresh food at festive gatherings. With the initial goal in 1992 to create a direct selling opportunity for farmers, the Markets have become Comox Valley venues of food, fun, discovery, and connecting. We produce our weekly Markets to create healthy food networks that sustain our land, our community, and our homes.

Comox Valley Farmers Markets organizes farmers markets; with the Saturday market running year round, and extra summer markets in multiple locations through the peak growing season. Our markets serve almost 100 vendors, thousands of shoppers and generate over 2 million dollars in sales annually.

Our organization supports local farmers and food producers, who grow, raise, bake, process, or catch the products for sale at the market. Through our work, we help keep local farmland in production and provide business and employment opportunities for hundreds of people in our local community.

The role of the market manager is to ensure the smooth operation of the market each market day by:

  • Managing vendor attendance
  • Managing set up and tear down
  • Managing Market Operations
  • Manage the collection, data entry and balancing of table fees and reimbursement of tokens/coupons
  • Ensuring the rules/policies of the Market are being followed
  • Supporting Special Events

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Vendor Coordination

  • Attendance confirmation and planning market day layout of vendors (mapping), community tables and musicians
  • Support orientation of new vendors
  • Collection of vendor fees, vendor sales reports
  • Ensuring Market rules/policies are followed by all vendors


Market Operations

  • Arriving 2 hours in advance of market open and remaining until closing procedures are complete (usually an hour after the market closes)
  • Setup of the Market equipment (tables/chairs, stage, tents, umbrellas) and community information tables, banners, signs, and other Market materials
  • Manage Market information/token sale table
  • Manage traffic ‘flow’ customers, dogs, vendor signs etc.
  • Collection on site and reconciling of table fees, token sales, and coupons in weekly market cash out sheets
  • Communication with Executive Director to ensure ongoing planning and smooth operations
  • Track and update Executive Director on inventory and supply levels



  • Tracking sales data, token sales, coupons in excel
  • Ensuring table fee/token/coupon floats are accurate and maintained
  • Balancing above after each market


Communications and Community Relations

  • Book musicians for summer markets
  • On-site communication with volunteers, musicians, vendors, customers, neighbors, site hosts
  • Follow-up communication with vendors regarding rule violations and market day activities
  • Communication with Executive Director to ensure ongoing planning and smooth operations

Key Performance Metrics: (examples below, will be determined by Manager and Executive Director)

  • Table Fees collected are balanced within +/- $2.00 each market day
  • Tokens balanced each week
  • Market is appropriately staffed with volunteers
  • Market supplies and equipment are well maintained
  • Vendor community is highly satisfied with their experience at the market
  • Rules are being enforced in a gracious way


Skills/Attributes Required

  • Ability to direct vendors and maintain positive vendor relations
  • Are a team player and can work quickly and efficiently under tight time constraints
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced outdoor environment (we work outside rain or shine)
  • Ability to organize and plan for onsite event logistics
  • Ability to recruit, train and delegate to volunteers
  • Ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically with a variety of stakeholders (ie. business associations, vendors, neighbours, community groups, regulatory authorities)
  • Ability to manage daily market funds and market money of up to $3000
  • Ability to enforce market rules and policies
  • Knowledge of event and food safety, either through the completion of Market Safe or Food Safe or both.
  • Physically able to withstand long periods of standing, lifting 50lbs unaided and working in all types of weather
  • Good driving record and experience towing a trailer
  • Have an interest in at least one of the following areas: agriculture, nutrition, food security, community health, community development, community economic development.


Education and Experience

Typically the above skills and attributes can be acquired through the following education and experience (though other education and experience backgrounds will be considered if they meet the above skill requirements):

  • Completion of High School, with a preference for completion of a college or university program ideally with courses in any of the following: event planning, administration, management, marketing, communications, human resources or community engagement, conflict resolution
  • Level 1 Food Safe certification, First Aid Training and Class 5 Drivers license - tow vehicle is an asset (Food safe certificate and First Aid Training can be provided)
  • Experience managing people in a service/retail/operations setting
  • Experience coordinating events including planning logistics, delegating tasks and communicating with stakeholders
  • Experience with daily cash management of funds up to $5000.
  • Experience using social media to engage and inform
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite of programs



The Market Manager, with the guidance of the Executive Director, is responsible for on-site operations of the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market Associations Markets.  Administrative tasks are completed from home and require strong time management and organizational skills. The Saturday Market runs year round, and we also run 2 additional weekly markets through the summer months. It is the Market Managers job to ensure that the market runs smoothly for both vendors and customers, that the rules and policies of the market are being upheld on the field and that any issues are dealt with in a timely and effective manner.



$20 per hour after training/probation period
